PERLIN, SEYMOUR

Seymour J Perlin, age 81, of Tappan passed away quietly on Tuesday, November 16, 2010. He was born on December 7, 1928, in Norwalk, CT, to parents Joseph and Helen Perlin. He had an older brother Malcolm, and a younger brother Herbert, both now deceased. He grew up in Mountaindale, NY. Upon graduation from Mountaindale High School, he earned a Bachelor Degree from New York University. He went on at NYU to earn Masters and Doctoral degrees from the School of Education. He began his education career in New York City as a teacher at P.S. 39 in the Bronx, where by time he was 30 he became Assistant Principal. In 1967 he was appointed Principal at P.S. 59 in the Bronx, a position he held until his retirement in 1990. After 40 years of service, he retired from the New York City public school system. He then served as an adjunct professor at St. Thomas Aquinas and Dominican Colleges, primarily teaching American History. He was a veteran of the Korean War, and married Rita Kanegson in Monticello, NY. They resided in the Bronx until 1966, when they and their children moved to Tappan. He loved American History, particularly the American Civil War era. He was active in Tappan Troop 8 of the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the Tappantown Historical Society, and a founding member of the Orangetown Historical Museum. He was a long time member of Toastmasters, where he won many awards for his oratorial skills. He loved to write, and authored the popular web site bronxsynagogues.org, a pictorial and social history of the South Bronx. He was known for his kindness, generosity, intelligence, love of people, far ranging knowledge of many fields, and amazing sense of humor. He is survived by his wife Rita, children Mark (wife Ria David), Ken (wife Sophie Malleret), Joan (husband Ross Herman) and Liz (husband John O'Hara). He is also survived by grandchildren Ariel, Jonathan and Eitan Perlin, Jillian, Jacob and David Herman, and Thomas and Jacqueline O'Hara.
