The Journal News Summer Internship Program

Open to college students and Masters Program students in exchange for school credit.

Students need to reside in the tri-state area and have a car available for work.

Internships run 8 weeks, at approximately 37 hours per week.

BASIC FUNCTION
The Multimedia Editor will have proven multimedia-editing skills and an excellent understanding of journalism craft, principles and practices, as well as experience in leading news and event coverage using audio, photography and video. Incumbent will collaborate and communicate with editors, reporters and visuals team to brainstorm, conceive and gather content for top-notch news and enterprise packages.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Direct, edit and produce dynamic and daily multimedia journalism for multiple platforms within deadline that accurately informs, entertains and enlightens readers.
  • Work with Visual Journalists and newsroom reporters to develop visual story-telling for multiple platforms using all available tools.
  • Fill in for the Visuals Director in her absence.
  • Work with editors and coordinator to develop long-range plans to differentiate Web content from print to engage new audiences, such as use of social media to cover breaking news.
  • Work on special projects as assigned and handles other essential tasks as assigned.
  • QUALIFICATIONS
    Bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism, communications or related field-or equivalent experience. Excellent, proven visual skills, with a minimum 5-plus year’s multimedia experience at a newspaper or mass-market magazine or website. Technology. Possesses comprehensive knowledge of the cameras, iPhones, tablets, lights, computers and software used to produce visual and audio journalism for multiple platforms. Proficient working in studio environments for high-end magazine work and in-house videos. Linear video. Excels at directing and editing excellent short- and medium-length news and feature videos. Streaming video. Excels at directing live news events, features and chats from any locations. Have a deep understanding of the live-streaming studio and related software and hardware. Comfortable with the Web, especially social networking (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, BrightCove Mobile, CoverItLive) blogging. iPhone, tablets and apps and able to identify the latest Web trends. Capable of developing talent through personal feedback and by sharing knowledge and experiences. Demonstrates capacity to work with other people in a collaborative manner.

    BASIC FUNCTION
    The Technical Support Analyst uses analytical and technical skills as well as work experience to solve system technology problems; install and maintain computer hardware and operating systems. Responsible for implementing and maintaining technologies used in the creation, distribution and monitoring of our current business products with a sense of how Multimedia technologies can benefit and enhance our business. Responsible for monitoring production critical systems, providing status reports and document new and existing procedures. The Technical Support Analyst will evaluate process workflows and recommend improvements to generate efficiency and effectiveness.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Troubleshoot and solve PC/Macintosh-based software and hardware issues.
  • Maintain operating systems and application packages on the network and PC and Mac systems.
  • Perform system administration on the VOIP Phone System.
  • Configure and install PC/Macintosh hardware.
  • Assist manager with system planning for PC/Macs, or other system-based PC or Mac hardware/software.
  • Maintain documentation for hardware, software and operating procedures and inventories.
  • React to change productively and handle other essential tasks as assigned.
  • QUALIFICATIONS
    Individuals must have at least a Bachelor’s Degree, in a related field, however, many years of work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree. Professional certification is a plus. This position requires in-depth knowledge of, but not limited to, operating systems, industry prominent software packages, communications software/equipment and working knowledge of network topologies in a Lan/Wan environment. Effective organizational, writing and communication skills are required as well as a positive “can do” attitude when providing support to our customer base.

    The Statehouse Correspondent position provides high-quality watchdog and breaking news content on state government and politics in Albany, New York, for Gannett New York’s newspapers across multiple platforms. The position includes coverage of education and health care. The correspondent is a self-starter with outstanding people and written and verbal communication skills, and has the ability to excel under intense deadline pressure in a competitive market. The person needs to be able to handle short- and long-term assignments and be able to learn, contribute and innovate in a rapidly changing news environment. Demonstrates flexibility and is skilled with multitasking, including writing for blogs and other social media. Uses times efficiently. Contributes to a team environment and shares knowledge and skills with colleagues through peer training. Leads by example in performance and attitude. Pursues ongoing professional development.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Generates and customizes breaking and enterprise content for multiple platforms, drawing on knowledge, expertise and sources on a specific topic or topics. Does interviews on and off camera.
  • Develops a deep understanding of our audience and connects with the audience through blogs, social networking and direct contact.
  • Uses technology to optimize presentation of content, including photos, videos, mapping, data, etc. Learns the basics in emerging technology to stay current.
  • Other duties assigned by Bureau Chief.
  • QUALIFICATIONS
    A Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in journalism, communications or a related field -- or equivalent experience; and three or more years of daily journalism experience, preferably in a multiple platform environment. Excellent watchdog reporting skills with a track record of covering government. Ability to report and write with expertise and authority on topics important to our audiences. Adept at turning original reporting into print and online packages customized to specific geographic and demographic audiences. Ability to construct compelling local narratives, trend pieces, profiles and investigative stories to be presented in creative and innovative ways across multiple platforms. Demonstrates knowledge and expertise in a given area or areas in order to be able to report and write knowledgeably about a key topic or topics of interest to our audience. Must have a valid driver’s license and access to an automobile. Must be able to work in all weather conditions, night and day, and be available to work weekends and holidays.
