Election Central: Why are you running for office or seeking re-election?
Walters: The time is ripe for change. With Common Core being forced upon the school community without any trial or evidence that it works, it must be stopped. The uincumbents love Common Core and all that is stands for. The implementation was brutal and completely unwarranted. Nanuet has a rich history of being the highest or second highest achieving district in Rockland County. There is no need to change those things which have worked for what amounts to generations.
As well, we still need to look at other revenue streams for the district. To rely on tax reveneue in one form or another for practically all of our revenue is something that the taxpayers need relief from. This, coupled with the increased costs associated with Common Core, make finding alternative sourcing for money and materials even more pronounced.
Election Central: What in your personal, civic or professional experience recommends your election or return to office?
Walters: I am a parent to three children in the district. Two of the incumbents do not have children in the district.
I am a taxpayer paying full taxes with no real deductions from the STAR program.
I am an educator and have seen learning models that have worked and other that have not worked.
Election Central: What would be your top three priorities if you are elected or re-elected?
Walters: 1) Stopping Common Core. There is not enough space to put here all of the flaws in Common Core, but the bottom line iwith it is this:
If the ultimate goasl of Common Core is to have everybody learn the same thing at the same time regardless of location, why do we bother to have school districts? Why do we bother to have such disparity in per student spending? Why do we bother to have 50 state departements of education with different rules regarding teacher qualification, etc.?
2) We must find different revenue streams to bring in money and materials to the district. Now we rely on direct taxation through property taxes and indiract taxation through funding from state and federal governments. We need to have other means to get revenue in the form of money and meterials to be brought into Nanuet. Directors of Development are normal in colleges, universities and private schools. We need to emulate that model and have someone on board to bring in alternate moneies and materials.
3) We need to make sure that all students are served with challenging and engaging curriculum. We need to add for those who are high achievers and continue to strengthen those who have challenges in their learning. My chidren fall inside the totality of the range of learning skills and achievement, and we need to make sure they are all serviced properly.
