Election Central: What in your personal, civic or professional experience recommends your election or return to office?
Malia: I have earned the respect of my peers as evidenced by my election as Vice President and being named to the NYS Virtual Hall of Fame and being selected by the Superintendent to be on the District's negotiating team for the CSEA contract.
I have the experience of being a Board member for the last 9 years and being on the Audit, Legislative Action and Special Education committees.
I have a vested interest in continuing the educational improvements the District has been experiencing since I have a 3rd grader.
I have the knowledge of the complicated property tax system as a member of the Town of Cortlandt Board of Assessment Review.
Election Central: What would be your top three priorities if you are elected or re-elected?
Malia: 1. Continue to improve the education offered to our students. While on the Board, every decision I have made has been based upon what is best for the students. I learned at the outset of my Board tenure that the students, and the education we offer them is the most important thing.
2. Continue to keep the cost of education as low as possible while still providing an excellent education. While on the Board I have regularly questioned expenditures, the need for the expenditure and whether there is a more cost effective alternative. I am also a member of the audit committee which helps to keep watch on the District expenditures and recommends policies and procedures to ensure the appropriate use of District funds.
3. To continue to work collaboratively with my fellow Board members and not let me personal views interfere with the decision making process. While on the Board I have always listened to the viewpoints of my fellow Board members and have never had a personal agenda.
